Ginger health benefits
Ginger is a multifaceted and delicious spice and also known for its health benefits. It is used in cooking all over the world, including Nigeria. It also has a tangy, slightly peppery flavour and also used in drinks like Kunu or Ginger Ale or Tea, and as a flavouring for foods such as pap.
Apart from cooking, Ginger has other uses, most of which are medicinal. It has a lot of health benefits, some of which we will be highlighting below.
These are a few health benefits of the root plant:
Gingerol, a bioactive component that activates the spice receptors on the tongue, can be found in this spice. Research (and personal experience) has shown that the spice can help reduce and cure nausea, especially morning sickness. Fresh lemon and ginger as tea is also quite refreshing and helps with a cold.
This spice contains antioxidants – including gingerol- that has anti-inflammatory properties. Essentially, it prevents compounds that may cause inflammation from taking effect on cells in the body.
The anti-inflammatory properties of Ginger may also help in reducing blood cholesterol, which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease. It also helps to lower blood pressure.
The spice has an active ingredient in reducing stomach acid and is a natural cure for indigestion and gastrointestinal issues. To help relieve digestive problems, about four grams of Ginger a day should do. Health experts recommend spreading this out over the day.
Studies have shown that the compounds in Ginger contain active anti-carcinogenic agents. These agents may help in the prevention of cancer. Other roots/spices with these same properties include Turmeric, Garlic, Black Pepper, Oregano, etc.
These are a few ways in which this spice can be useful for your health. There are many more, and we recommend using the fresh root as it contains more of the active compound gingerol.
