When it is time, it is time. Time to be seen on a larger scale, time be celebrated and spoken about across board. And this is the time for Baba Akara. We came across Baba Akara whose real name is Chibueze Damian on Twitter when his daughter dropped a Father’s Appreciation Tweet on his birthday. We had called to inform him we’d be coming and he kept calling to check on how the journey was going until we arrived at his place. He was exceptionally accommodating and enthusiastic, when we asked if we could record him, he approved. It’s evident that he takes great pride in his work. After bidding him farewell and heading home, he called to ensure we arrived home safely. Not only does he make delicious Akara, but he’s also super friendly and welcoming.

THE ORIGIN
Baba Akara started his business with just one cup of beans, it does sound like those motivational stories, but we see evidence of his intentionality, actions and drive. This journey began about 25 years ago, and happens to be one of Mr Chidueze’s best decisions. He came to Lagos from Ebonyi to build his restaurant, while he might not one of the top ten recognized restaurants in Lagos, he is achieving his dreams of catering to the public through his patterned delicacy. He had high hopes when working in his earlier stage for his boss who owned a canteen and had promised to set him up, except he didn’t do that and Mr Chidueze began selling Akara alongside his girlfriend as at that year who was experienced in the business. To make it light, his boss returned to work with him because his business had failed and employing him was the best way Baba Akara could support him.
THE RESULT
The process became beautiful when results began to appear. From building his house, to owing chains of workers, to sending his children through school, etc. Mr Chidueze’s children also spoke of times they got teased by their school members and how it transitioned into being asked for Akara by their classmates. Baba Akara from Mushin has shown us that success begins with one step and it enhances with a dare. And we are glad to have began the journey which led to Baba Akara’s media visibility. Here are some interview moments that sprung up after our visit.
