The skin is the largest organ in the human body with many elements affecting its health. Food is one of these factors and is arguably the most important. The saying ‘you are what you eat’ has never been more accurate.
For instance, some processed foods are proven to contain carcinogenic agents which can cause cancer anywhere in the body. Studies have also shown that food containing high levels of refined sugar can be damaging to the skin. Sugar can cause inflammation in the body, which in turn, can cause acne and eczema.
Fortunately, there are certain food items and classes that are great for your skin, and I don’t mean orally alone. In this article, we’re going to point out some foods that will make your skin better and healthier.
Food/fruits rich in Vitamin C do wonders for the skin. Vitamins C helps in collagen production. Collagen is a protein that makes up ⅓ of the body’s protein composition. Vitamin C is known to improve the elasticity of the skin, reduces wrinkles and prevents dryness. Examples of food that contain Vitamin C are citrus fruits, e.g. oranges and lemons, bell peppers, berries like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mangoes, pawpaws, pineapples etc.
Apart from being a great source of fibre, whose importance we’ve also examined, nuts are also useful for skin improvement and general health. Walnuts, Almonds, Cashew Nuts contain omega-three fatty acids that help with ageing of the skin. They also have anti-inflammatory properties that prevent acne and other skin issues.
You know those disgusting fish oil tablets that are sold as supplements? The supplements in those tablets are obtained from fatty fish which are rich in omega-three fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are great anti-ageing agents that prevent the release of enzymes that cause sun damage. They also help in boosting collagen, which we have already established is good for the skin. Some examples of fatty fish are Sardines, Mackerel, Tuna and Salmon.
Packed with antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients, Avocado is beneficial for the skin. Avocado can be consumed in several ways, some of which are Guacamole, as a spread for bread, in salads etc. Apart from being beneficial when ingested, Avocado is also suitable for external use on the skin (face mask), on the hair (as a hair oil). Avocaodo helps to soften and moisturise dry skin.
Chocolate is not only delicious and induces endorphins; it is also good for your skin. It contains properties that prevent harmful UV rays from infiltrating the epidermis. It also has anti-ageing properties. Best to take in moderation.
To achieve the best version of your skin possible, avoid eating anything that is high in sugar, carbs and oil.
