Get essential groceries on a budget
If SAPA has ever dealt with you, you would understand why lavish spending isn’t advisable. If you are a Lagosian, you are probably wondering how Grocery Shopping on a budget is possible. To you, it is not achievable because you’ve never taken the time to draw up a budget for yourself. A monthly grocery budget should be a priority, especially if you are a young adult or student trying to survive on tight financial resources. To secure and manage your next allowance, here are some things you should consider doing on/before your next trip to the market.
MAKE A LIST:
The easiest way to go shopping and not exhaust all your resources is by making a list. Never should grocery shopping be spontaneous; you need to know what you are getting, why, and the estimated price for each item especially if you are on a tight budget.
BUY THE SMALLEST SIZE:
Thanks to the economy package, most things come in smaller plastics or sachet. That’s your cue; there is no need to purchase the biggest bottle of oil. Some people argue that it is cheaper and easier to buy the biggest size so you can always reuse it, but I think it is safer to have diverse food products by getting the smallest size of all things. It also helps you curb excessive eating habits and prevents food from going to waste. So, get the small oil, buy the small sugar/butter, etc.
GET HALF A DOZEN:
This is similar to buying small sizes. To enable you to save, buy half a dozen of spaghetti, half a dozen of tomato paste. The point is to manage resources such that you get things that are mostly needed for the next one month.
LAUGH WITH THE SELLERS:
This always works when you are bargaining except if you go to a supermarket where the prices are fixed. If not, laugh when you negotiate and slash the prices 3/4 before surrendering. That’s how to curb excessive spending.
ACTION STEPS FOR YOUR NEXT GROCERY SHOPPING
• Make a list of all you need & create a budget.
• Input price estimate for all items but in the smallest size, this is also to avoid waste or excessive use of items
• Make purchases from a store that sells at wholesale price.
• Negotiate appropriately.
