Today I decided to try out a salad and smoothie from Smoothie Express, a Smoothie delivery company in Lagos just because I haven’t tried out other varieties of healthy vendors besides Green Grill House . Though I had tried two smoothies for science purposes (that didn’t make it to the blog) and didn’t love it as much and since it’s a new year, decided to give it another go.
Ordering was very simple and kudos to them with their online order system via their website. Been trying out this FitFam thing and ordered the Slim Pineapple Smoothie as opposed to the regular blend. Whats the difference you may ask? Well, the smoothie is made up of Pineapple, Banana and Skimmed Milk (149 cal) while the regular blend of the Pineapple Smoothie is made up of Pineapple, Banana, Low Fat Milk, Honey – 400cal. The major difference is the addition of honey and low fat milk and the calories each blend is made up of. The Slim pineapple smoothie was watery which I’m guessing was so because of the base being skimmed milk but either ways, the outcome of the Smoothie regardless of type of blend will most likely still be watery. This made the smoothie end up being like juice instead which is not how I typically enjoy smoothies. To top up the watered down smoothie, the pineapple itself was lost and more of skimmed milk. I’ll need to try out the regular blend to conclude if its just their thing really. The Smoothie costs ₦800 by the way for a 600ML cup. The smoothie was a 2/5 for me – I’ve had better
In addition to the Smoothie, I also ordered the Smoothie Express House Special Salad. The salad menu at Smoothie Express is not as extensive maybe because the business focus seems to be just Smoothies (idk). I wanted something with Chicken and Avocado at the same time as opposed to just an Avocado Salad or a Chicken Salad which cost ₦1,000 and ₦1,400 respectively. Looked further down on the menu and saw the House Special Salad which is more like a combo of everything but for ₦2,500 which is almost double the price of the regular salads. The salad comes with three (3) choices of dressing which was not available upon check out on the website and knew about this through the call placed and went with the Mayo dressing.
Whats in the House Special Salad? Spicy Chicken, Avocado, Spicy Shrimps (Or Tuna), Cabbage, Carrot, Lettuce, Cucumbers, Sweet Corn, Kidney Beans, Green Peas, Green Peppers, Red Peppers and Eggs – 400cal (the default is for the salad to come with Shrimps but you can request for Tuna if that is your preference)
I have mixed feelings about this salad. The portion is great as the bowl is 7 inches long, about 4.5 inches wide and 2 inches deep (ah yes I measured) BUT the Chicken and Shrimps were spicy thus giving the salad an ‘off-taste’. I really can’t explain this off-taste of a thing but it was not nice enough to have on its own. Seems they have assumed everyone loves pepper or spicy stuff (if you are pepper-less, sorry for you) and it would be nice if they put out information somewhere that the protein would be spicy or better still ask how customers would prefer it. The details on the website is great but little details like this also matter.
To be fair, the Shrimp Salad on its own is tagged ‘Spicy Shrimp Salad’ but that’s not enough and leaves room for assumptions. The salad was quite filling and I had to eat it twice as I couldn’t finish it in one sitting. However, I didn’t enjoy the salad much simply because of how spicy the Chicken and Shrimps were and I just couldn’t cope.
What I did love though which was the best thing for me, was the delivery charge which was just 300 bucks! (₦300) and this is one of the cheapest I’ve seen after Lunchroom whose delivery charge is ₦200 (deliveries to Marina, Ikoyi & Lagos Island only). Smoothie Express delivers to V.I, Ikoyi, Lekki Phase 1, Marina for ₦300 and to Ikate/Ilasan Lekki for ₦500. I wasn’t ready to pay ₦700 for Green Grill House who recently revised their price upwards from ₦500 to ₦700. Every Naira counts now oh!
I didn’t enjoy much of my meal from Smoothie Express and the salad didn’t leave a lasting impression of “I have to try this again” but everyone deserves 2nd chances so will be ordering again but perhaps I will have to be more specific with how I want it. The time between ordering and delivering was 45 minutes which isn’t so bad though I followed up with a call after placing my order online (I have trust issues..lol)
