- Stay Focused
Cooking can be exciting, but distractions can lead to accidents. Avoid talking on the phone, texting, or watching TV while handling hot pans or sharp knives. If you use gas to cook and you are the type that likes to be on call while in the kitchen, this is your cue to stop. Concentrate on what you’re doing, and save the multitasking for later. - Knife Safety
Knives can be your best friend or your worst enemy in the kitchen. Keep them sharp – a sharp knife is less likely to slip. Also, always cut away from yourself and use a cutting board to avoid accidental injuries. - Handles In
Here’s a handy rule: when you’re cooking on the stovetop, turn pot handles inward. This simple trick can prevent accidental spills when you or someone else walks by. - Handling Hot Stuff
Potholders and oven mitts should be your go-to when handling hot pots and pans. Don’t risk a painful burn by trying to be tough – use the proper protection.

We get it; you’re hungry. But rushing can lead to accidents. Take your time when cooking, and use timers to remind you when something’s ready. A little patience can go a long way in kitchen safety. - Know when to ask for help
If you’re attempting a complex recipe or using unfamiliar equipment, don’t hesitate to ask for help. There’s no shame in seeking guidance or assistance from someone more experienced in the kitchen. You can also check the equipment’s manual or check YouTube videos. - First Aid Kit
Accidents can happen despite your best efforts. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a first aid kit in your kitchen. Be prepared for minor cuts, burns, and scrapes, so you can quickly address them and get back to cooking.
