We visited yet another mainland restaurant for a review, this time in Ikeja. Rhodes BBQ Smokehouse is a fast-casual spot that sells American style barbecue ribs. It’s easy to find, but can easily be missed.
Rhodes BBQ Smokehouse is very conscious safety-wise when it comes to COVID-19. There was a security guard at the entrance checking temperatures and making sure that everyone who goes in is wearing a mask, washes their hands and uses a sanitiser. I particularly liked that.
I wouldn’t say that there’s anything like an ambience in Rhodes BBQ Smokehouse, because it pretty much felt like walking into any fast-casual place. The space is okay, nothing exceptional. It looks like a place to have lunch with co-workers or take the family on a lazy Sunday afternoon. There is an outdoor space, an indoor seating area and then another on the first floor, which is where I sat. There is a lot of natural light which is good for picture quality.
When I walked up the stairs, there was a waiter seated at a counter. He welcomed me and brought the menu. My waiter, Fidelis, was a trainee, I know this because there he was wearing a badge that said so. He knew what he was doing though because he was courteous, and knew the menu well. I started with the Virgin Colada, which cost ₦2,100. It came quite quickly, in less than ten minutes. The Virgin Colada was nice and refreshing because let me tell you, the sun: was blazing. It was a welcome sensation for my tastebuds. I liked its flavour too: it retained the tropical flavour of a Pina Colada, without the alcohol. It also had hints of pineapple and coconut.
I ordered the Louis style ribs: 3/4 bones plate; which costs ₦4,200 and came with complimentary sides; I decided on the coleslaw, which was a mistake. I wouldn’t have bought it if Fidelis had told me the ribs also came with complimentary Texas garlic toast. The food didn’t take long, it arrived about twelve minutes after I ordered.
The Louis style pork ribs were actually really good. Fall-of-the-bone-soft, with a very tasty sauce that had a slight tang. I’m guessing the sauce is an inhouse Rhodes BBQ Smokehouse recipe. The coleslaw was disappointing, it tasted like the type they sell in Chicken republic- just carrot and cabbage with too-sweet-mayo that is served as ‘dressing’.
Dessert wasn’t available, so I added dusted fries to my order. The fries were dusted with something called ‘Rose magic dust’ which according to Fidelis, is an in-house special. The “dust” tasted like it had subtle hints of cinnamon. The fries were nice, which is expected- it’s hard to mess up fries.
Portion-wise, the food was more than enough, it was sufficient.
All in all, eating at Rhodes BBQ Smokehouse was an okay experience, not spectacular, just okay.
