HISTORY
Everything has a beginning, and so does cocktail. The first record of cocktail goes far back as the 1800s when it appeared in the Farmer’s Cabinet beverage page editorial. Although it is hard to tell who mixed the first cocktail or discovered the menu, cocktails became popularly addressed as the elites drink. The first and most common cocktail mix was just sugar, bitters, spirit, and water until the mixing guide evolved when people began publishing different books on ways to mix your cocktails. As expected, with a new discovery, the rest of the world began to experiment, hence birthing cocktails with liquor, fruits, grapefruit soda, etc.
COCKTAIL IN TROUBLE
Everything gets in trouble, and so does cocktail. If you are conversant with history, you would understand there is a tendency for a product to be banned if the source isn’t properly understood. Cocktail was banned in the early 1900s, so most men, especially Shakespeare lovers had to sneak to bars to drink cocktails. It was during this season that different people began coming up with other cocktail recipes to avoid the persecution that comes with taking cocktail in its original style.
FRUIT COCKTAIL
Fruit cocktail was one of the recipes developed to avoid persecution. It is basically fruit sliced into spirit or mixed with spirit; a healthy cocktail recipe mix served with the juice of fruits, a little spirit, and syrup. Ideally, fruit cocktails shouldn’t have too much alcohol. Do you think that would make it less of a cocktail?
