It’s World Food Day! Without food, there would have been nothing to run to when you get stressed and hungry. There would have been no way to reward yourself after a long day or week. So yes, shout out to God for creating food. Another set of people to give a shoutout to would be the ancestors who birthed certain flavors and seasonings and some snacks that would forever leave you in awe. What would life be without Puff-Puff, Tacos, Jollof rice, and Empanadas?
That’s why today as World Food Day we are taking time to highlight some indigenous meals and their origin.
Foodies, shall we?
Nigeria: The home of diversity
Nigeria is famously recognized for its rich culture and its people. There are about 371 tribes in Nigeria with 3 of the tribes being the major ones. That’s about 371 different types of food, maybe more. But here are some meals with origins traced to Nigerian soil.
Amala: This meal is famous among the Yoruba, the origin is rumored to be Ibadan.
Tuwo Shinkafa: This dish is famous among the Hausas.
Starch and Banga Soup: originated from Niger Delta. A fun fact about this meal is that most tribes have their own version.
Iyan and Efo Elegusi: is from Ondo, the tribe of high mountains.
Italy: The home of Pizza
Contrary to the general assumption that Pasta originated from Italy, Pizza is actually a meal from Italy. The origin of Pasta has been said to be from China and Greek origins. That doesn’t stop us from enjoying the meal. Italy, however, is the home of Pizza. The credit for the creation was Pizza belongs to the Naples community, Italy.
Spain: The home of Dough
Empanadas are made by stuffing vegetables, meats, or vegetables into a dough. This meal was first developed in Spain. The Nigerian version of this is meat pie. It is perfect as a side for food or snacks.
Senegal: The home of the Wolofs.
Most Ghanaians and Nigerians have argued that they founded Jollof rice, unfortunately, that’s a myth. Jollof rice originated from Senegal amongst the Wolof people.
China: The home of Dumplings
Dumpling isn’t common in some countries, but being a foodie means trying everything, right? You should try dumplings one of these days. It is a Chinese stuffed meal shaped after the moon, it signifies an important part of Chinese culture.
Germany: The home to Sausages
Germany has the best and most amazingly shaped sausages that can be eaten with bread, rice, or anything you desire. One of the most famous sausages is called Bratwurst. Here is an image of breakfast with sausage.
Mexico: The home to Tacos.
If you have never had Taco, this is a call to action. You should try it. Tacos are made from Tortillas and stuffed with desired fillings. The meal gives nutrients, and it originated in Mexico. You could order Tacos in honor of World food day.
