In ancient times, preservation was done through smoking or by putting food in salt water. Now, technology has made preservation easier, however, there are certain foods and ingredients that require special preservation.
Food and ingredients like Vegetables, Onions, Eggs, etc. We have made a list of how to best preserve meals in the table below.
Food/ Ingredients | Preservation |
Onions/garlic | These are best stored in cool and dry places. E.g. well cleaned, ventilated, and dried baskets. You could also place them in a brown paper bag. |
Vegetable- Potatoes, carrots, tomatoes | You can store these in plastic bags, wire mesh, or natural fiber baskets. For your carrots, have them packed in a sealed container with leaves, sawdust, moist sand. |
Meat | These are best preserved through drying, smoking, salting. |
Grains – Rice & Wheat | These are best stored in air-tight containers, or dried in the sun. |
Fruits | You can preserve these by drying or refrigerating them. |
Cakes/Pastries | Preserve your pastries by putting them in a plastic bag, then zip lock. Then store in an air-tight food container. |
Soups | You can preserve your soups by canning them in jars. |
Dairy | You can heat up your milk until you need to drink it, this preservation method is called pasteurization |
