If you were asked to name the top 10 fast-food restaurants in Lagos, Mega Chicken would be on that list. But, does this restaurant only serve the regular “after Sunday service” food or is there more to it?
Mega Chicken seems to have more in store for Lagosians than an affordable plate of Jollof rice and an oversized piece of chicken. The restaurant also hosts guests to an affordable tongue soaring trip to China. Say hello to “7th Continent a La Carte”, the Chinese meal serving arm of Mega Chicken.
Located in the heart of the ever-busy mainland, this space offers a decent view of the city to its diners. The restaurant is super spacious making it perfect for group outings on a budget. I like that the tables have a fair amount of distance between them, it made me feel safe knowing I would not be making unnecessary bodily contact with anyone. (Neither would they be able to hear me gossip. What a win!)
As soon as I stepped into Mega Chicken, I was lead by a waiter – John – who dressed smart, spoke well, was polite and was pretty patient with me. John took his time to explain items on the menu and helped me pick something based on my meal preference. He took my order by 2:50 pm and by 3:00 pm my starter, steamed towel and complimentary cashew nuts arrived. Talk about swift service.
To wake my taste buds and stir up my appetite, I started my dining here with a bowl of Chicken Corn soup (₦1,200) and Chicken Spring Rolls (₦400 each). The soup was thick in texture but light on the tongue. It had a middling chicken flavour and sweetness to it. I loved that every scoop came with a fair share of sweet corn and chicken.
The spring roll was crispy and crunchy on the outside with the right ratio of chicken to veggies on the inside. The pieces of chicken in the spring roll were cut in big chunks which I appreciate (I don’t like looking for the protein in my food). It was a bit oily to touch, but nothing a quick wipe on a piece of tissue would not take care of.
For my entree, I had a medium plate of Mega Special Fried Rice which cost ₦2,500 (I requested for it without shrimps), a medium plate of Sliced Beef in Black Bean Sauce priced at ₦3,700, a glass of Chapman (₦1,200) and a bottle of water (₦400). However, my dish came with a small plate of chilli sauce (the Yoruba in me cannot put to words how grateful I was for this).
The Mega Special Fried Rice alone was good. It was a good balance of rice, shredded beef, chicken, veggies and fried eggs. It was well cooked and lightly seasoned. I, however, found the shredded beef and chicken a bit too dry.
The Black Bean Sauce really did bring the sauce to the party. This dauntless dish had a good gravy texture, some veggies, black bean and of course a good amount of shredded beef. The flavour was quite pronounced, even after I paired it with the rice, its presence was quite overpowering.
The chilli sauce came to the rescue here, as a little bit of it went a long way to bring balance to the meal in terms of flavour profile and spice (I needed that heat).
The Chapman was pretty basic to me, it had an obvious taste of syrup and bitters. It did not knock the socks off my feet but it was a good deal for the price I paid.
At the end of the day, Mega Chicken is not a high-end restaurant and has never posed to be. My experience was expected – okay food at a great price. However, I must commend their staff, the customer service was great. The view the restaurant offers is lovely and it has ample sitting space. If you are looking to enjoy a Chinese meal on a budget, this is a great place to do so. For the price, everything you get here is a steal in Lagos.
