A guide on the food you can eat during a Daniel Fast
Hey Foodies, you are wondering what this is about, why would another foodie dare talk about a fast?, don’t panic.
Daniel Fast is a partial fast with food consumption restricted to water, fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. It is simply the consumption of plant-based food and it is named in reference to Daniel in the bible, following the event of his abstinence from royal food.
Most people have conflicts selecting meals to eat as they get confused about whether or not it is plant-based. In this article, you will get a list of meals to buy, try, make and eat on Daniel fast. The whole point of a Daniel fast is eating natural, yes, avoiding processed meals at a point of purity.
Nuts and Seeds: For nutrient sake, there are specific nutrient seeds and nuts you should try, e.g. Almond, sunflower, groundnut, cashew, peanuts, walnut, flax, etc. Make sure all these nuts are raw and not salted. You will most likely get groundnut and cashew everywhere, avoid roasted nuts, there is a high chance they would be salted. Ask people who are victims of Lagos traffic. It would be rare to see peanuts without preservatives though. You can also try dates, tigernut seeds.
Natural Oil and butter: The emphasis is on natural oils. You can make your meals from coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, and sesame oil. For butter or spread, you can try peanut butter with no preservatives; plain and pure. You can find olive and coconut oil in supermarkets and stores around you in Lagos. You can use olive oil in place of vegetable oil. It is organic and natural. You can also make popcorn, and salad dressing with it.
Legumes: For this, you can explore dried, can, or cooked legumes. It could be white beans, brown beans, green peas, kidney peas, azuki peas, etc. Beans are sold everywhere in Lagos, just make sure the vendor doesn’t add stew or sauce, better still, make it yourself. Food vendors might use stock water, just to be safe, make it yourself.
Vegetables: This is the exciting part as a Nigerian, you can eat almost anything. You can explore with Efo (water spinach) and tomatoes. There are lots of vegetables like eggplants, okra, onions, lettuce, cabbage, etc. You can even make homemade vegetable soup.
Fruits: There are endless possibilities here. From apples, bananas, and carrots, to watermelon, and many more. Endless possibilities, you could even rock your fast with a fruit salad and smoothies.
Liquid: Water, Vinegar, coconut milk, almond milk, etc. A perfect mix with your fruit salad. You could squeeze out fresh juice as the liquid.
Whole Grains: Millets, Rice grains, Wheat, Oats, etc. are great for consumption during a Daniel fast. You can make oats and include grapes and apples. You can also have popcorn as long as the ingredients are plant-based.
Tubers: You can also have yams, potatoes, and cassava for this fast. You could boil or roast them and make a sauce with olive oil and bell peppers.
