Shopping at Iponri Market: Iponri Market in Lagos is one of the city’s most popular destinations for household shopping, kitchenware, and home décor. Located in Surulere, this bustling market is known for its variety — from plates and cutlery to décor pieces, souvenirs, school supplies, and even party items. Many Lagosians see Iponri as a one-stop market where you can find both everyday essentials and unique statement pieces for the home.
If you’re setting up a new apartment or looking to refresh your space without breaking the bank, Iponri Market is the go-to spot.
My sister and I needed some household and Kitchen items and we decided to visit Iponri Market at Alaka in Surulere. It was my first time here and I was amazed at how much variety you can find at Iponri Market. I heard it was the best place to get plates, souvenirs, decor pieces and more, but we had to see for ourselves. After the trip, I could not believe I had snoozed for this long. Read along, while I also share a few hacks to note when coming to this Market.

The market has hundreds of shops dedicated to household and kitchen items. You’ll find:
Plates, bowls, and complete dinner sets
Pots, pans, and cooking utensils
Glassware and cutlery
Kitchen mats and storage containers
Affordable décor pieces like clocks, vases, and frames
Fun souvenirs (yes, even Mickey Mouse piggy banks!)
Whether you’re buying in bulk for events or just need a few essentials, the vendors here offer plenty of options to choose from.
Then we moved to the home décor section, and we checked out 3 different home décor shops and when I tell you they had varieties, believe me when I say that. I didn’t even realize this Mickey Mouse piece was a piggy bank. Crazy!!

Shopping at Iponri Market can feel overwhelming if it’s your first time, so here are some helpful hacks:
Bring enough cash (funds, funds, funds!) – Most vendors prefer cash transactions, and bargaining power is stronger when you’re not relying on transfers.
Go with someone familiar with the market – This helps with navigation and avoiding overpricing.
Don’t bring your younger siblings 😅 – You might end up as their ATM for the day!
Come with a shopping list – With over 200 shops, it’s easy to get distracted. A list keeps you focused.
Be ready to bargain – Prices are good, but vendors know their products are in demand, so expect a little “shakara.”
On our way out we found another woman’s shop where she sells kitchen and home essentials and we got a couple of items from her, like this kitchen mat.

Yes — but with a caveat. Iponri Market is not the cheapest market in Lagos, but it offers quality items at fair prices. For kitchenware, décor, and household goods, you’ll find prices ranging from ₦1,000 to ₦20,500 and upwards depending on the product.
Think of it this way: it’s value for money rather than a “cheap” market. Vendors here stock items that last, so you get quality alongside affordability.
If I were setting up a new apartment, this is where I would check first because they have it all. It can be overwhelming because Iponri market has over 200 stores, but rest assured, you will find everything you are looking for.
