My search for the best Amala in Lagos is still on and that led me to Abula Tawa by Belleful Varieties in Lekki. Their space is small and there is a sit out area but it’s advisable to take out as it gets really hot there. Before I go on, permit me, please allow me insert some local Yoruba pun here – Abula Tawa ti bu mi lowo (translation) – Trying Tawa’s Abula has backed fired.

MEAL

They had Amala and Ofada rice when I visited so I thought to have two wraps/portions of Amala, ewedu, gbegiri and proteins, I am glad I didn’t do too much. The Amala per portion was an okay size. The texture of the Amala was smooth, but it tasted stale. The gbegiri had a weird colour and tasted funny. You could easily tell that it wasn’t freshly made. The stew didn’t slap like I had expected so it left me disappointed; it was just pale. The sizes of the proteins were quite large and good for the price. I had meat, ponmo, and cow intestine which were tasty and the best part of my meal as they were well seasoned. The food generally was terrible because it was stale. The Amala was even microwaved. Amala Tawa is a big NO for me.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

The meal wasn’t nice and their space was hot. They didn’t have a menu which I found a bit weird. The staff were polite and the time spent processing my order was about 15 minutes – n0w I know why. The packaging was nice though. As an Abula spot, they need to do better in making fresh meals and hot sizzling amala, because who microwaves Amala? This food adventure is inserting abula spots phobia in me, if that’s a thing.
