Mothers love their kitchen, it is really hard to separate mothers from the kitchen. Of course, if you are Nigerian, you would understand that as a female you need to be in the kitchen with your mum; It is a part of the Foodies Constitution. If you fail, you owe the entire world an explanation. To make this Mother’s Day memorable, we asked some foodies to share their best moments and kitchen tips they learnt from their mother, here is how it went:
What is your name?
Peace Moyinoluwa.
What is the best moment you share with your mum in the kitchen?
Every moment in the kitchen with my mum is the best. Whenever I am in the house, I am in the kitchen, and she is always in the kitchen with me. She is always there because she wants to witness me do everything right. When I make a mistake, she would say, ‘you’ll soon leave for your husband’s house, and I won’t be there to correct you’ just know after that statement, she is taking over to do it her way. I learned most of my cooking skills from her; I have been cooking since I was 9. Also, if I am not in the kitchen while my mum is cooking and she didn’t send me on an errand, or I don’t tell her I am up to something reasonable, there would be no food for me.
One kitchen tip you learned from your mum.
It is important to always clean up, tidy the kitchen; when you pick an item, wash it after using it. Do it while cooking, don’t wait till you are done.

What is the best moment you share with your mum in the kitchen?
I remember my mum always telling me to taste the soup, the stew, and the batter she wants to use in making akara or moi-moi; it made me feel like I was part of what was going on in the kitchen.

As opposed to buying meat from the butchers, my mum usually went to the abattoir to get the meat, I was curious and always wanted to follow her, finally, she let me. Boy, did my nose suffer 😂 her Hausa customer wanted to get me tea, and I refused oh because I could puke. I remember her pricing the meat with care (not wickedness) and pitying me; it was my last trip anyways. I also remember how she taught me to peel the beans for akara or moinmoin, don’t leave it in the water for too long, “tete gboo” (peel it quickly). She would always say that if it gets too soft, it become more difficult to peel.

What is the best moment you share with your mum in the kitchen?
Everyone was cooking in the kitchen, but my sister was watching carton because she is the last born. My mama seized her tab and made her plug all the leaves for the vegetable soup 😭😭. When she finished, she went to cry heavy tears.

The kitchen tip I learned from my mum is that boiling your meat with all the seasoning you might want to add later makes it easier and sweeter than adding spices afterward. Also, blending onion 🧅 and pepper, mixing it in egusi, and adding it to the meat stock after adding oil saves you a lot of time.

What is the best moment you share with your mum in the kitchen?
My mum always wants me in the kitchen with her; we are always gist and gossiping 😂 amidst washing the fish/ponmo/ turkey. (She makes sure my hands are busy) Then eventually leaves me to the cooking after adding the necessary ingredients. It is just so hilarious now that I think of it.

Clean and wash everything necessary; you might be too tired to do that after cooking, and it would leave the kitchen a mess.
