“I love content creation, I feel like it is my place of peace” – Daniel Ochuko
Tell us a bit about yourself, your personality, and your background.
My name is Daniel Ochuko. I studied Food Science and Technology at Rivers State University, Port Harcourt; I graduated in December 2022. I am pretty much still figuring out my life while creating content. I love food, but I don’t eat so much. I own a lot of kitchen equipment/gadgets.
How did you start your journey as a Food content creator?
Food has always been a thing of interest, but it wasn’t a drive for the course I studied. In fact, I don’t recommend Food Science and Technology for people who are really into food because it is more of an engineering course. For me, the journey started in 2020 during the lockdown. I have always known I would work with food; I once thought about being a chef or something. I started following Sisi Yemmie and The Kitchen Muse, but the real deal was when I discovered ‘Dimma Umeh‘. I followed her closely, fell in love with her creative style, and thought if she could do it, so could I. I had to think through it because I was into skincare, so I had to make a pick. I settled for food content creation, and I have no regrets.
What do you consider the challenging part of this journey?
That would be not having any assistance or team to help because where I am at right now, it is a bit tough being everything around the brand. Another thing is how people accept this; some would say things like ‘Oh, you tried for a man’. Sometimes, I understand. On other days, I am just not having it. I think some Nigerians are just strongly opinionated about how they want things to be; they always have a comment on how the recipes should be and how it should turn out. I believe cooking should be creative.
What is the most remarkable moment for you in this journey?
Hitting 10K followers on Instagram and having people whom I look up to and am inspired by reach out, give me kudos, or send their support in some way. At first, I wasn’t sure how my content would be received, but seeing those things happen gives me joy.
What is the best meal you’ve ever made?
That would be the fruit cake I made last December. It was unbelievable; I had soaked the raisins and whatnot for almost a year before baking the cake.
Have you ever had some disapproval from friends or family?
My friends are very supportive, and my mum is as well. I think my dad is getting there; he is just concerned about if or not it is a sustainable path, which I understand.
What is your vision for your brand in the next 3-5 years?
I see myself having team members and partnering with some of my dream brands.
Is there any advice or recommendation you have for the audience?
While it is easier to desire my job or style, it is important to note I had help and resources, so don’t beat up yourself trying to get to certain places without resources. We all could use some help and resources.
